Inspired by Mikal Cronin’s short concept EP under the moniker, David Fox and the Face Boost Five, entitled The Origin of Man, Alexander and the Growing Mind created his own conceptual EP On Top of the World. Recorded in the last weeks of August 2007, this short narrative of climbing up a mountain was inspired by the skyline of the Saddleback Mountains. Plunky banjos and minimalistic piano are wrapped up in a variety of percussion, saws, marxophones, wine glasses and trumpets, taking you up to the top of the mountain where we can see anything.

A bit cheesy in execution, this early experiment politely nods toward folk and twee influences, not to mention the ultra-serious voice over at the end. Simple and plaintive melodies interweave with light atmosphere to create the naive melancholia of a teenager hearkening back to nature.

This was supposed to be “reissued” with a story written by then girlfriend and founding member of Your Yellow Dress, Carrie Muller, as the 6th release on Pacific Nature Recording and here it is again for Download.

When I first released this, long legal size paper was used to make the paper sleeve that folded out with complete information of the instrumentation for each song. The paper sleeve was folded to contain the CD-R and accompanying story, which was all put in a poly sleeve (along with glitter and leaves sometimes!)
